Tsa Carry On Luggage Sizes
Will the TSA freak out if I put a portable hard drive in my suitcase when I board a plane?
I am planning to bring an external hard drive with me for my trip from CT to Florida. It is sort of large, about the size of a bible. I don't really care if they search it or whatever, but will they take apart my luggage to investigate it? I plan to put it in my checked-in luggage and not a carry-on.
I'm also a little concerned it will get damaged when the luggage throwers toss it around the tarmac.

I don't think the TSA would have too much issue with it in a checked suitcase, but I also wouldn't suggest checking it, due to the risk of theft. Electronics are often stolen out of suitcases by baggage handlers (and the airline will not cover you in case it is stolen).
If you do check it, do so with the expectation that you'll never see it again.
