question for poeple who have burned a lot of Incense cones before?

I have used incense sticks (nag champa) for a long time but when my local store oddly ran out all they had was the nag champa incense cones left. So i bought some and brought it home, instead of putting it on my wooden incense stick holder (obviously i was not about to do that, the whole house could have burned down i figured) i put a cone (after lighting it) in a near empty glass candle holder which still had a bit of wax from a old candle that had o more wick in it left, well i must have done something wrong because in about 2 min the whole candle holder was smoking (not in the right way) & giving off a bad 'somethings on fire!?' burning smell. I extinguished it with lots of water but are puzzled on what i did wrong.So, in all my Q is: how can i safely/correctly burn incense cones? do the cones need to be on a base made of something precise like metal/aluminum foil?. Please me as specific as you can THANKS

i burn mine in a glass ashtray with no problems.
