do i have to pay to check luggage?
it's been a long time since i've flown. i got a package deal to go visit my daughter and now it's been increasingly costing me a bundle.
now i understand i have to PAY to check my bags?? i'm staying a week out west with one child. i intend for us each to check one bag - seems like united is charging $15 plus $25 for a second bag.
is it true that i will need to come up with 80 dollars round trip just for bringing suitcases?
I just got back from flying today, and we took Airtran. I did have to pay for my bag ($15 each way) because my flight was booked after a certain date, when the rule went into affect.
The only way to know for sure is to check United's website. It will state clearly the size, weight, # of and price restrictions for checked luggage. For me, I figured that checking the bag meant being able to take as many toiletries as I wanted/needed (I was going to a wedding--needed ALL of my stuff to look good!) and for me it was worth the $15.
If you want to avoid this, you can always bring one small suitcase+one personal item (purse) on the plane as carry-on. If you choose this, however, you'll need to limit the amount of liquid/gel toiletries you pack to no bottles over 3 oz./all in one quart-sized bag to comply with TSA rules, and consolidate the amount of clothing you'll bring. Also remember that a child's clothing is much smaller and bulkier than an adult's.
Another option is to use vaccuum seal bags, which you pack with clothing close and then suck the air out of. This will flatten your clothing and helps to save a lot of space (you can pack more into one bag).
