Airline travel question! Help please!?

I'm going to Costa Rica and Panama for two weeks for a medical volunteer trip. I've never been on a plane before, so I'm not familiar with their policies and their customer service is not very helpful. I need to just pack the basic necessities, so I want to carry the largest carry-on bag possible, along with a large back pack. I have a rolling Duffel Bag which is 45 inches, but it is not the exact measurements that are posted on the airline's website. Does my carry-on bag have to be exactly 22 x 14 x 9 inches, or does it just have to be 45 inches all together? Thanks so much!

It has to fit in the space provided that is 22 x 14 x 9 inches. So if it is longer and narrower it wont fit.

You can check the bag at the airport when u leave and claim it at baggage claim when u arrive
