Can I bring my skateboard deck as well as a backpack as one piece of carry-on luggage?

I'm flying with "Sky Services". I just need to know if I can have my skateboard attached to my sk8backpack or in my hand and still count it as one carry-on item, cause that's easier than checking it on in a separate bag.

i was told at the desk once when i was flying that i could carry it on, then boarding the plane, i had to check it and then ended up being the last one on and had to sit next to the emergency exit, where the seats dont lean back at all. so, if i had to do it again, i wouldnt try to carry it on.
