The Michigan Law Quadrangle: Architecture and Origins

The Michigan Law Quadrangle: Architecture and Origins

$12.98

"The Michigan Law Quadrangle: Architecture and Origins" offers the reader an engaging armchair tour of one of the gems of American academic architecture. Newcomers to this handsome set of buildings and habitues of its noble halls alike will find in author Kathryn Horste a discerning and instructive guide. Her observations, together with the more than sixty photographs commissioned to illustrate them, provide a new and memorable encounter with the Michigan Law Quad. Horste starts us off with an examination of the buildings' exteriors, their arrangement and aesthetic impact, and an appreciation of the historical resonances freely, at times whimsically, employed by master architects at the top of their form. The mid-portion of her work traces the history of the extraordinary gift of these buildings to a public university by one fiercely devoted and thoroughly committed alumnus and places the rich, if not always serene, interplay of donor, institution, and architect in a new light. She broadens her study with an overview of the development of the quadrangle's architects, the firm York & Sawyer, in the full maturity of the American Beaux Arts school. Her text concludes with a comprehensive amble through the quadrangle's elegant interiors. From their most imposing spaces to some of their most charming details, these buildings, which have for more than seventy years at once served and inspired successive generations of students and professors, are given their due. Both text and photographs are particularly successful in capturing the buildings' wealth of worksmanship in metal, wood, glass, stone, and plaster by artisans whose craft, now nearly extinct, was near its last flowering whenthe quad was built. Yet the wedding of a strikingly modern addition, below ground, to the rich, traditional buildings original to the complex emerges as a remarkable achievement that extends and amplifies the integrity of the quad. "The Michigan Law Quadrangle: Architecture and Origins" explores one of Michigan's most interesting architectural sites from a broad perspective that enlivens the mind and educates the eye. Kathryn Horste is an independent scholar living in Ann Arbor. She holds a Ph.D. in the History of Art from the University of Michigan, and she has been a member of the faculty at Colgate University. From 1987 to 1990 she served as Collection Development Specialist at the Getty Research Institute. Her publications include "Cloister Design and Monastic Reform in Toulouse: The Romanesque Sculpture of La Daurade," Gary Quesada, who was commissioned to photograph the University of Michigan Law Quad for this book, began his career as a protege of noted architectural photographer Balthazar Korab, with whom he has subsequently had a long professional association. In recent years Mr. Quesada undertook legal studies; he now holds a J.D. and combines the practice of law in Royal Oak, Michigan, with photographic assignments for the

Finns in Michigan

Finns in Michigan

$12.98

In Finns in Michigan Gary Kaunonen probes the intricacies of immigration, labor, and ideology among the members of this intriguing and historically important ethnic group. He skillfully traces the evolution of a vibrant, diverse, dramatic, and at times deeply quarrelsome people who left an indelible mark on the state's history. Kaunonen examines the many schisms and splits that define the course of Finnish social life in Michigan. Michigan's Finns flocked to diverse cultural organizations that span a broad ideological spectrum. This book examines an extraordinarily wide range of organizations, including religious institutions, temperance societies, working-class political and labor groups, the cooperative movement, and a nationalist association of Finns. Finns in Michigan is a study of the contributions of Michigan's Finns in the workplace, in society, and in cultural life. Unlike previous, sometimes mythologized, histories of the Finns in Michigan, Kaunonen's rendition strives to be a more accurate representation of "the good, the bad, and the other" activities of a group he calls "possibly America's most diverse family."

The Michigan Gardening Guide

The Michigan Gardening Guide

$5.98

It's all here---step-by-step guidance for gardening success in Michigan's varying soil types and often difficult climate. Veteran garden writer Jerry Minnich presents detailed directions and practical tips for growing vegetables, herbs, flowers, landscaping plants, and house plants, as well as dependable advice on hundreds of garden operations. Minnich begins where gardening begins---in the soil---as he tells how to build a healthy and productive soil, and how to solve soil problems. In subsequent chapters he reveals composting and mulching techniques, and what to do when the weather is less than congenial for gardens. Minnich describes more than sixty Michigan vegetables, tells how to grow them, and lists recommended varieties for each. There are also chapters on growing fruits, berries, and nuts, and on food storage. Minnich devotes a chapter to growing annuals and perennials, another on lawns, trees, and ornamental woody plants. He tells how to deal with insect and animal pests without using harmful chemicals, and he includes a major section on houseplants. Throughout, Minnich approaches the subject with experience, wit, and style. Readers will learn how to deal with weeds in the lawn, how to surf the landscape for com-posting materials, and how to grow mulch at home. He explains intercropping, companion planting, seed saving, cover cropping, strip composting and other techniques. He tells how to raise unusual crops such as tomatillos and radicchio, as well as the standard favorites. He explains how the science of phenology can help the gardener, how to take a soil test, how to use earthworms to turn household wastes in to compost, and how to attract birds and toads to the garden. And he lists more than a thousand varieties of vegetables, herbs, fruits, and ornamentals that can be trusted to grow in the Michigan climate. "The Michigan Gardening Guide" is the one backyard guide that Michigan gardeners can trust. It is a tool as indispensable as the hoe and the shovel. Jerry Minnich has written about gardening for more than twenty years and has been commended with a Certificate of Merit by the Garden Writers Association of America. His interest in gardening began when he joined the staff of "Organic Gardening" in the 1950s.
