Master Lock Duplicate Keys

Is it legal for my landlord to refuse to give me an extra key to the building in which I am renting?

I live in a multi-unit apartment building in NYC. The landlord won't let me have an extra key to the front door (one of those master locks that needs a code to duplicate) because he says it's a studio. I told him I need an extra for when the house cleaner comes once a week or for my boyfriend (who lives temporarily across the country and visits often) or for someone who will look after my cat when I'm out of town. Is this legal? What can I do about this?

Completely legal. Ony residents have a right to a key.
