Golden Round-Trip in Lucerne...cheaper without a tour?
I'm going to be backpacking through Europe over the summer and one of the things at the top of my wish list is the golden round trip in Switzerland. I'll be staying in Lucerne for two days, and I've found a lot of tour groups that arrange the trip, but they're all very high priced (about $115-$130 depending on the company). I was wondering if it is able to be done without a tour group and if it's cheaper that way. I can't figure out what on earth would cost $115...but I'd be willing to cut corners to be able to do it so if it comes down to it, I'll pay it. But is there a ticket office or anything like that where I can buy a ticket the day that I want to go at a lower price, or do I have to book through a tour? Thanks!
There is absolutely no need to join a tour group to do this classic round trip, you can't get lost if you do it on your own. You'll be in good company of heaps of Japs, Russians, Yanks and Chinese 
Therefore, expect some queing before going up to Mount Pilatus from Alpnachstad.
Simply buy your round trip ticket at the ticket office of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB/CFF/FFS) at Lucerne main station. Buy it on the day of your scheduled departure for the tour or one day before. The price for the whole trip is 94 Sfr/67 € in 2nd class or 107 Sfr/76 € in 1st class (1st class recommended only if you want to have a better view on the boat).
Suggestion in order to make the trip a little cheaper: Walk down from Mount Pilatus to Kriens.
