Backpack vs. hand-held satchel/briefcase: Which is better for your back and overall posture?
For the past four years, I have been using a Dooney & Burke nylon Tote Bag (similar in appearance to the more popular Longchamp Tote Bags) for school and sometimes for work. However, the bag lacks structure in the actual "tote" part and its straps are probably too long and narrow to be holding the things I typically put inside it (books, folders, my laptop). I want to buy a new bag for school and am considering either a backpack or a satchel/briefcase that can be held by the hand. I figure a backpack would be better than the tote because the weight of the load would be distributed more evenly, and perhaps a hand-held satchel or briefcase might also be better because I wouldn't be using my back to support the weight as much, if at all. Which of the two options would be better for one's posture and to avoid back and shoulder pain? Any sort of help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
A well designed backpack or a messenger type satchel would probably be best. I prefer a backpack. Check here for ergonomic backpacks.
