Perfect Backpack for One Month Trek Around Europe?
I will be taking a one month trip around Europe over the summer traveling by train and staying in hostels. I want to make sure I don't have a backpack that is too heavy, but at the same time I'll need one to hold enough clothes and such.
What size backpack should I be looking into? 30 liters? 60 liters? I've seen some great Northface packs that have millions of pockets, but I'm just not convinced I'll need that much room. Obviously I want one with a frame so that it's a little easier to pack around.
For anyone who has done this kind of a trip, how much gear should I even look into packing? Should I bring enough clothes for a week and just do laundry whenever possible? What are some great tips and tricks you wish you had known before heading out in Europe.
I recommend bringing the smallest bag you feel comfortable with. It's a real pain dragging a heavy pack around, and anything near 60L is completely unnecessary.
I bring a week's worth of clothes, and do laundry along the way. My usual list for summer:
2 pairs jeans/trousers
5 shirts (including 1 nicer one)
1 light pullover/jacket
1 rain pancho
7 pairs underwear/socks
1 pair comfortable shoes/1 pair sandals
1 small towel
Swimsuit
Toiletries (I bring comb, razors, makeup but buy soap/shampoo/etc locally)
Plug adapter/power converter (if you're bringing electronics, depends whether they are dual voltage)
Extra batteries
Guide book/maps/planned itineraries/contact numbers/passport copies
Journal/reading material
Some hostels require a sleep sheet, and if you don't have one, they'll charge rent. It's easy to make your own and bring it with you as well:

You really don't need more than that. If you find you're missing something, you can always buy it once you're there. I think something like this would work well:
