Was this an iridium flare that I saw?
Four or five years ago, my buddy and I were on a six-day backpacking trip. We're camped on a creek bed, and watching for some Perseid meteors, when we both observed a point of light suddenly appear the disappear over the course of about one second. During this time, the light intensity grew quite bright - I'd say maybe triple the brightness of Venus, at least. As it disappeared, a much fainter point of light seemed to shoot out from this position and travel across they sky. I figure this must have simply been a satellite, whose solar panels perfectly reflected sunlight in our direction for that one second duration. Is this what an iridium flare is? What did we see?
It sounds like an Iridium flare. They normally last for a few seconds and can easily outshine Venus. As they fade out, you can often track the satellite for a short while after, but just about on the fringe of naked eye visibility. The reflection comes from one of 3 flat antennae attached to each satellite. The surface of each of these antennae is highly reflective. It's also possible that was another (not Iridium) satellite and you happened to catch a reflection of the Sun off its solar panels.
