Backpack Sleeping Pad
What type of padding should I use for me Sleeping Bag?
I am going on a week long backpacking trip to the Appalachian Trail this summer with my Boy Scout Troop, and was trying to decide whether to get a 3.5 pound sleeping bag that has enough padding in it, or to get a 1.5 pound sleeping bag and get a 0.5 pound mat to go under it. Both will fit on my pack, and come out to be about the same in cost. I was wondering which would be more comfortable, and which would be easier to take on the trail for a week.
I am getting a synthetic stuffed bag in case it gets wet on the trail.

Go with a thick pad and lighter weight bag. Therm-a-Rest is the type that most hikers prefer. Your back will appreciate it more. The advantage is that the mat "inflates" itself, so you don't have to blow it up. If you get cold during the night, you can slip on another layer of clothes, but I doubt that will be an issue at this time of year. Have fun!
