What can I do to improve my breathing while backpacking at higher altitudes?
I recently went to the Rocky Mountains and followed everyone's advice about sleeping at the higher elevation before trying to do any hikes. I tried to take my pack up Longs Peak, and had to turn around because I was having a lot of trouble breathing. I thought I was about the same level of fitness as the friend I went with, but he had no problems at all.
I live at about 500 ft above sea level and get a decent amount of exercise. I ride my bike about 100 miles a week averaging 16 mph and have completed several centuries (100 miles in one day), so I feel like I'm in pretty good shape. I can also backpack 15-20 miles a day here at sea level. I do however have trouble breathing when sprinting or cycling quickly up steep hills.
Are breathing while sprinting and breathing at high altitudes similar? What can I do to improve this kind of breathing so when I go back I'll have an easier time? Are running or swimming better for this kind of breathing that cycling?
How long did you acclimate? Some people take longer to acclimate. Biking is great cardio excersize, but stairclimbing and walking with a load is better preparation for higher altitudes, in my opinion. Several years ago I read of some device, like a straw that limited your air intake a little and simulated breathing at higher altitudes, but I don't know it it's still available and whether or not it really works. They do make "tents" that reduce atmospheric pressure and some guys doing the Himalaya thing have used them to acclimate, but I imagine they are REALLY expensive. I've never climbed Long's peak but I have climbed (hiked really) Huron Peak and Wetterhorn in Colorado. I live at sea level and I prepared by running. When I went out west to climb, I could run six miles comfortably at sea level. Both of the 14'ers I climbed really kicked my butt, but my climbing partner (who lived at 7000 feet) kept me from quitting and I made both climbs. A partner to keep you fired up and motivated helps a LOT. Rest steps are essential! Pressure breathing (google it to see the technique) works too. Above all, try to prepare yourself mentally. Visualize success at ALL times. Remember that just because you are really winded, you are not going to die from that. You can go a LONG ways and for a LONG time when you are out of breath. It just hurts, but you CAN keep going. I'd also try an easier mountain than Long's Peak or, if you used a moderate route try an easier one (although I don't think there ARE any "easy" routes up Long's Peak). Finally, don't give up. Keep trying! A guide service that works on Mt. Ranier used to say that if you could go five miles in 75 minutes you could make it to the top of Ranier. I don't know how true THAT is, but if you have the mental toughness that makes all the difference, and the climb up Ranier is a lot more vertical feet on most routes than the vertical elevation on most Colorado peaks. Good luck, be careful, and keep trying. You'll make it.
