Antisocial Drivers

Antisocial Drivers

This book addresses three questions: why are there so many antisocial drivers who are inconsiderate, selfish, rude, and frequently drive in an offensive manner that disregards the rights of other drivers to be treated courteously and safely; (2) how can antisocial drivers be persuaded to become prosocial drivers who drive carefully with due consideration for the well-being of others; and (3) how can novice drivers be prevented from acquiring antisocial driving habits? The authors answer these questions by integrating, for the very first time, three large bodies of research: traffic research that has identified personal factors associated with driving violations and risky or careless driving; psychological research that has identified personal factors associated with a variety of types of antisocial behavior; and criminological research that has identified personal factors that are the targets of programs that effectively reduce antisocial behavior. Each body of research points to the same factors. Rehabilitation programs for antisocial individuals have achieved success by applying techniques which foster the development of the same cognitive skills, emotional skills, social skills, problem-solving skills, and values that are associated with antisocial driving. Effective programs include techniques that improve antisocial individuals’ impulse control, develop their pro- blem-solving skills, lead them to consider the consequences of their behavior, increase their ability to comprehend other people’s thoughts and feelings, enable them to acquire emotional control, and lead them to understand and appreciate social rules and obligations. The authors describe a 35-year research project that led to the development of a program that teaches cognitive/emotional skills and values that are required for prosocial competence and are antagonistic to antisocial behavior. The program has successfully taught such skills and values in fourteen countries to more than forty thousand of the most antisocial individuals. This book will be an excellent resource for lawmakers, driving instructors, probation officers, judges, enforcement officers in the field of traffic control, academics, and the general motoring public.

Republic of Drivers

Rising gas prices, sprawl and congestion, global warming, even obesity—driving is a factor in many of the most contentious issues of our time. So how did we get here? How did automobile use become so vital to the identity of Americans? Republic of Drivers looks back at the period between 1895 and 1961—from the founding of the first automobile factory in America to the creation of the Interstate Highway System—to find out how driving evolved into a crucial symbol of freedom and agency.             Cotten Seiler combs through a vast number of historical, social scientific, philosophical, and literary sources to illustrate the importance of driving to modern American conceptions of the self and the social and political order. He finds that as the figure of the driver blurred into the figure of the citizen, automobility became a powerful resource for women, African Americans, and others seeking entry into the public sphere. And yet, he argues, the individualistic but anonymous act of driving has also monopolized our thinking about freedom and democracy, discouraging the crafting of a more sustainable way of life. As our fantasies of the open road turn into fears of a looming energy crisis, Seiler shows us just how we ended up a republic of drivers—and where we might be headed.

Young Drivers

Traffic crashes are the single greatest killer of those aged 15-24 in OECD, and many ECMT, countries. In the OECD alone about 25 000 people in this age group die in crashes every year. In many countries, about 20% to 30% of total fatal crashes involve a young driver. For every young driver killed, more than 1.3 other people likely also die in the same crashes. Thus, young drivers pose a greater risk than other drivers to themselves, their passengers and other road users. This problem imposes substantial costs on individuals, families and societies. This report provides an overview of the scope of the problem of young driver risk, its primary causes and concrete options to combat it. The high levels of young driver risk result from factors of inexperience and age. In addition, crash and fatality levels are particularly pronounced among young men. There is no single solution. Rather, the goal of reduced young driver crashes must be pursued through a combination of countermeasures involving the licensing process, training and learning methods, enforcement, education and communication, and technology. These actions will require leadership and commitment, as well as a clear understanding of the costs and benefits of action.
